China is poised to keep its benchmark lending rates unchanged for a 17th consecutive month in October, according to a Reuters survey, after stronger-than-expected third-quarter GDP data reduced the likelihood of near-term easing. The survey, reported by Reuters, found that all 22 market participants polled this week expected the one-year and five-year loan prime rates to stay at 3.00% and 3.50% respectively at the upcoming review on Tuesday.
The loan prime rate is typically charged to banks most creditworthy clients and is calculated each month after 20 designated commercial banks submit proposed rates to the People's Bank of China. The unanimous expectation of steady settings comes as some major economies lean toward tighter monetary policy to contain inflation pressures, while China's long-dated bond yields hovered near a 15-month low.
China's economic growth rebounded from three-year lows in the third quarter, with strong exports offsetting restrained consumer spending, though analysts caution that growing reliance on external drivers is deepening structural imbalances. Market participants expect Beijing to meet its 2026 growth target of 4.5% to 5.0% without additional stimulus, supported by a strong start to the year and some recent modest fiscal and monetary support.
Investors are looking to a key financial forum in Beijing this afternoon, where PBOC Governor Pan Gongsheng is scheduled to speak, for signals on the country's monetary path. Separately, new home prices in China fell again in September, extending a slump of more than three years and indicating that policy support has yet to generate a broad recovery in housing demand.
