China Services Growth Slows in October as Competition and Costs Weigh

China's services activity expanded in October at its weakest pace since July, according to a private-sector survey reported by Reuters, as firms contended with intense competition and rising costs and business confidence eased.

The RatingDog China General Services PMI declined to 50.8 in October from 51.6 in September, the survey showed, staying above the 50 threshold that separates growth from contraction while registering its softest reading since July.

New business continued to grow at a rate broadly in line with September. New export business increased for a sixth consecutive month, extending the longest growth streak recorded since 2024.

Services companies kept adding both full-time and part-time staff to handle existing workloads. Still, heightened competition prompted firms to reduce their average selling prices for a second month, and the week-long Golden Week holiday provided little support.

Input prices rose at their fastest pace in five months, driven by higher costs for input materials, fuel and wages. Business confidence fell to its lowest level since July, with firms pointing to concerns about rising input prices and stronger competition.
